The 2008 Golf Marathon raised $10,164! Click here to view photos of the event.	Did you know? Southern Africa is one of the regions hardest hit by disease and poverty. In the areas where the orphan centers have been built, unemployment rate is 65% and the HIV infection rate is as high as 30%. The majority of those dying from AIDS are between the ages of 15-49, orphaning millions of children. In the next five years there will be 2 million orphans in South Africa alone. South African law discourages resident orphanages and/or adopting their children out of the country. Orphan centers are desperately needed.

Purpose Statement: Santa Cruz Cares’ focus is to raise funds for the building, and operational and material support of Orphan Day Care Centers in Southern Africa. So far we have paid for the construction and support of the Tsakelani Orphan Day Care Center in Soshanguve. We find monthly sponsors for each child the center serves. We have also committed to find sponsors for the children at ICB (Icisub ilo Ca Bana, which means "Hope for the Children") Center in Mansa, Zambia.

Future plans include

• Second Annual Golf Marathon - November 6, 2009, at Spring Hills Golf Course in Watsonville.
• Awareness building regarding individual sponsorship of orphaned childre at the Tsakelani Center.
• Gift cards for sale created from artwork done by the children at the Tsakelani Center.
• Fundraisers to purchase, or help to purchase, a vehicle for AFnetAid use in distributing food, clothing and other materials to their orphan centers and other sponsored services; to help in the completion of building storage units for the collection and distribution of supplies.
• Working with TLC in developing future teams to go and serve in South Africa.
  

• The AFnet Classic 100 Hole Golf Marathon with Profund November 7, 2008, at Spring Hills Golf Course in Watsonvillle.
• 2009 TLC WOW - Involvement which lead to an additional 31 sponsors stepping up.
• September 21, 2008, Santa Cruz Cares hosted "Fromage Fest" at Michael's on Main in Soquel.
• Participation at the 2008 WOW at TLC- at which cards designed by the orphans were sold; Johan Combrinck, President of AFnet and AFnet Aid, explained his program and its goals; and enough sponsors stepped forward to support all 68 orphans at the Tsakelani Center!
• October 27, 2007, Santa Cruz Cares team served hot chocolate and other good things to eat to Haunted Trail participants at Simpkins Family Swim Center.
• October 27, 2007, Sharefest - Santa Cruz Cares team worked at the Paloma House in their outdoor area from 9:00 - 12:00 noon.
• October 24, 2007, participation in Santa Cruz Farmers Market.
• July 22 - Celebration of the Grand Opening of the Tsakelani Center. Our celebration was at Twin Lakes Church the day our partners celebrated in Soshanguve, South Africa.
• July 21 - "Birthday Party" fund raiser for Santa Cruz Cares celebrating Jane Chapman's birthday.
• A garden party fund raiser with Jazz A in Cheryl LaMorte's beautiful garden on June 30, 2007.
• Participation in Women of Vision's Aids Awareness Day - April 21, 2007.
• Currently a drive to collect and recycle no longer in use cell phones.
• An alcohol free New Year's Eve Party on December 31, 2006.
• Participation in Macy's Community Shopping Day.
• A dinner/dance auction on April 29, 2006.

Now you can also donate your old cell phones to help these children! So far the donated cell phones have generated over $700 toward the Tsakelani Child Care Center!
